[Posted on Facebook] I’m not sure I’d be a Christian if it wasn’t for Sam. For my most formative years as a teenager he was the leader of my Youth Fellowship. Part of a double act with his wife Ann, they were the anti-epitome of trendy youth workers. Both pretty advanced in years by the time they took up the role, they opened their lives, hearts and home to us marauding teenage boys. He didn’t win my respect for being a deep theologian (I can’t remember a single thing he taught me): he won it for his warm, winsome manner allowing us room to explore faith, always saying yes (but changing it in some mysterious way down the line), laughing at our japes and for always showing up. I can see him in my mind’s eye rolling up some sound lead; he did the sound for absolutely everything in our church. (And in his time a pretty sharp bass player I think). Sad to hear of his passing but he now meets Jesus whom he loved. (Rev. Dr. L. H. Eagleson)
